STUDY ABROAD - PROGRAM SELECTION

Plan carefully. This will assist you with your long range career plans. There are many opportunities open to you when you plan to pursue study abroad program. However, one must consider all the parameters carefully before taking any step towards your study abroad goal and every parameter has its own importance. You need to consider various parameters like costing, program, location, field of study etc. Let us study them in a nutshell.

1. Subjects of Interest –

Study abroad program offers various subjects ranging from humanities & social sciences, business management, Law, Zoology etc. Take courses or specializations, which are not available in home campuses. Some  may even want take up subjects, which can offer richer experience. In this case particularly, you may need to spend an additional year in campus. Some students may just be interested in doing language courses through study abroad program from the fact that learning the local language in the host country becomes much easier. Listening and speaking practice is abundant. If you sail this boat, make sure that you take up the language course at your level of proficiency. Check all the program facilities like language labs, equipments, library facility, support tutors, multimedia center, further job prospects in home country etc.

2. Credit Transfer –

Make sure that you earn enough credit for your study abroad program. It may be possible that your home university credits are not approved and accepted in the study abroad office. Therefore, it is essential that you take the approvals written from home university in advance. The credits you earn for the study abroad program depend on the institution and the level of your course. The basic documents for credit transfer must give information on program duration (including hours spent in labs, lectures, field work etc), course content and format, assessment methods (exams, essays, projects etc), level of course and so on. It is also important that the home university must be an accredited institution so that the credits can be accepted for the study aboard program. The number of credits that can be transferred depends on the home university and the host university. A minimum grade may be required by certain institutions to receive suitable credits. Credits also depend on the quarter or semester system of the study aborad program. Internships, research, dissertation may also earn credits.
